Many of today’s most accomplished photographers learned the ins and outs of their trade by working as photo assistants, a time-honored method of apprenticeship. ASMP NY’s two-day Assistant’s Intensive will provide an insider’s perspective on the role of the assistant, the path to working in this career, and the skills necessary in the face of a rapidly evolving photo industry. The event will include an evening of panel discussions and Q & A, followed by a full day of working photo shoots where participants will have the opportunity to assist on sessions with photographers representing a wide range of working styles.

The Intensive offers a rare opportunity to learn from a group of experienced photographers and assistants who are entrenched in the heart of New York’s photo industry. Their work has appeared on the covers of major publications, in national advertising campaigns, and in notable galleries, and they have assisted a wide range of photographers working in food, fashion, portraiture, editorial coverage, fine art and much more.

Building a network of contacts is the best way to find a path toward a career as an assistant, and the Intensive is a great opportunity to meet fellow photographers and assistants. The event is perfect for students, emerging photographers and anyone who wants to learn more about working as a professional photo assistant.

Note this savings opportunity!

This is a great time for YPA members (and young photographers in general) to become ASMP student associate members! Students at the college or post secondary level can join ASMP at the $45 annual membership fee. The cost for this event is $75 for non-member students with student ID, but is priced at only $15 for ASMP student members. This means it is less expensive ($60) to attend as an ASMP student member. Non-members non-students will pay the full event price of $100.
