In this American Dream oriented era, every person is holding their dreams and striving to make them come true. They treat their self as a unique individual, so they always try to look charming in people’s eyes. People believe they’re born special, so to show how special they are, they’ll do whatever to entertain themselves. After all, the so called “American Freedom” is the core value in people’s lives. However, while someone is enjoying the atmosphere they created, some people are probably losing themselves in others’ self-entertaining. For the project, American Landscape, I have been recalling the five-year experience living in the United States. I realized that individualism has become the target which most people are pursuing.
As a result, many people begin to only think about their own business, and forget those who are living with them in the same environment. When this happens, people feel uninvited and lonely. Therefore, I derived this part and merged it with the idea of individualism. In the photographs, I intend to display scenes in which people display delight, but there’s always a person who is depressed. They’re actually seeking the way to join in, but the only emotions he feels is being forgotten. Just like what people experience sometimes; we go to a party with many strangers, but we never know how to join in people’s lives.
