The Non-Existing Force

Silence has created my heart and mind. It has given me the opportunity to grow, to define who I am today. However, my silence is not silent at all. Internally, it becomes a thousand voices blurting simultaneously, loudly, softly, words with deep meaning as well as nonsense. As much as I believe that silence is virtuous and necessary, it is a nonexistent force that becomes a double-edge sword. It gives freedom and peacefulness but it also imprisons and hurts. It has left me in solitude. It has encaged me. It provides a lying mask that promises safety and comfort. Seeing silence this way it becomes a burden. The unspoken words that are kept inside become unpleasant carrying an unusual kind of physical pain that often is felt but not seen.
Through this body of work, I explore those sentiments of burden and pain. It’s interesting how silence transforms into something that can be physically experienced but not often talked about. I present these images as comfort to those who have felt silence in this manner at one point or another in their lives. My vision guided me to bind the photographs together through the use of lines and nature, representing the encaging mask that not only covers our words but ourselves. The way it becomes a force that ties, surrounds and accumulates into a mass of emotions that affects and wears us down. Embodying the physical experience in a way to understand that even this type of silence with its burden is a natural occurrence.
